6 Tips to Optimize Home Comfort and Safety This Winter

It’s too early to predict what winter will bring this year, but we’re already thinking about optimizing your home’s comfort and safety.
1. Reverse Your Ceiling Fans
Here’s an easy way to circulate warm air in your home. Your fan blades should be running in a clockwise direction. This action pushes rising heat back down into the room.
2. Prevent Ice Dams
Were icicles hanging around your home last year? It probably means warm air is leaking from your attic due to inadequate insulation. Insulate now to prevent future heat loss and water damage.
3. Seal Around Windows and Doors
Use caulk to fill gaps between windows, door frames, and siding. Add weather stripping around doors to keep warm air in and cold air out.
4. Disconnect Hoses, Drain Water From Pipes
If your home doesn’t have frost-proof faucets, make sure you disconnect all hoses and drain any remaining water. Turn off the shut-off valve to outside faucets, too.
5. Test Your Sump Pump
Test your sump pump by pouring a few gallons of water into the pit. Make sure it runs to avoid a wet autumn or winter melt from flooding your home. A back-up sump pump can also easily be installed as a preventative measure.
6. Precision Furnace Tune-Up (PTSI)
Before you turn on the heat, consider having an Isaac expert perform an annual precision tune-up, safety inspection, and cleaning. It’s a smart way to ensure your furnace is working efficiently and safely.
