6 Signs Your Home Needs More Insulation

Winter is right around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to look for signs to see if your home could benefit from more insulation. If you home experiences any of the following signs, you may want to consider additional insulation.

1. High Energy Bills
Check your home’s energy bill history. Your energy provider most likely offers you an online dashboard comparing your energy consumption and costs to previous colder weather seasons. Higher energy bills during colder months are a good indication that your heat (and money) are going right out the window.

2. Inconsistent Temperatures
Each room in your home should maintain a similar temperature. As you move through the house, pay attention to rooms that may feel colder compared to others. This can be a sign that your home’s insulation is inadequate. Because heat is escaping your house, the HVAC system is forced to work harder – meaning you’re sacrificing money and comfort.

3. Drafts
Feeling drafts in certain areas of your home during fall and winter months means cold air is entering through the areas around window frames and doorways. This leads to a large percentage of your home’s heat loss. Adding insulation will eliminate cold spots and drafts.

4. Frozen Pipes
Frozen pipes are a problematic sign that your home has an insulation problem. Proper insulation protects your home from damage caused by freezing temperatures. Water damage from issues with your pipes can be very costly.

5. Does it Pass the Touch Test?
Walls, floors and ceilings should feel warm and dry to the touch in your home. An indication that there is not enough insulation can be drywall or paneling feeling damp or cold. Conversely, the walls outside of your home should feel cold because insulation stops the heat from escaping.

6. Icicles
Another indicator of poor insulation are icicles hanging from the eaves on your roof. Icicles are formed when heat rising from a poorly insulated home melts the lowest layer of snow on a roof. The melted water trickles down towards your gutters and freezes. While icicles can be pretty to look at, they can be causing damage to your roof and gutters, costing you a pretty penny.
